Federal authorities has entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
