The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
