19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 championships have been achieved on hard surfaces

A comeback Daniil Medvedev secured his initial trophy for over two years with victory over Corentin Moutet in the tournament title decider.

The athlete, a former world number one, has experienced a challenging season, achieving just a single victory at the Grand Slams and experiencing a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

His unpredictability on the professional circuit - and issues with his serving in specific - caused him exiting of the top ten and finally splitting with former trainer Cervara.

Currently collaborating with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, he has gradually improved in the last few weeks - peaking in a hard-fought three-set victory over challenger Moutet.

It is the player's first trophy after the Italian tournament and maiden on a hard court since that period of that year.

Success also indicates the Russian has achieved 21 titles at 21 distinct events.

"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a tournament with my two daughters at once, so to secure a championship is particularly special," said world number 14 the champion.

"This championship is in dedication of my child Victoria, because the maiden victory I achieved when my first daughter her name was delivered was for her."

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his past six title deciders, featuring in the German tournament previously this season.

Medvedev's defensive strategy and recurring outbursts on court had caused commentators to wonder if his ability to perform at the highest level was concluded.

Yet the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in the past month, making an effort to advance forward and compete assertively, backed up by an improved service.

The champion fought back from a break down in the first set against the difficult opponent, taking 4 of the last five exchanges to take the lead.

Both players swapped service breaks in the middle set before the challenger, attempting for his initial professional title, seized the initiative to push for a final set.

Moutet rescued 4 initial break points in a close third set before the Russian broke to that score to secure the win.

Suitably, the winner earned the title with a rally at the front of the court, with Moutet failing to control a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
