The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
