Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a wide array of heroes, and a gripping narrative including angels, evil spirits, and malevolent powers expanding in strength within the urban setting.
Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure lie ahead.
The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed
The latest chapter ended with a huge suspense moment and presented the premier party of adventurers who will split off from the central cast to undertake their own adventure, distinct from the additional parties.
This warrior group consists of the determined fighter (played by Travis), the agile character (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).
Why Split the Party?
Given a large ensemble, it was clear from the start that maintaining everyone at one table would be unfeasible.
Hence, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before splitting into three smaller tables: Warriors, Planners, and Seekers.
The Nature of the Combat Party
According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for players who are drawn to a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven narrative style where non-violent answers are few and far between.
At first glance, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might look out of place, but the developments of episode 3 show why these five characters are perfectly fit for the combat party.
Why They Must Go
For one thing, the group knows exactly where to go next after a intense opening clash with the enemy group.
A former ally of Thjazi—whose death kicked off the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, invading the secret base, striking the rogue, and taking all the enchanted items to dispose of.
The traitor then paid off his debts and escaped to a secure base in the remote area, beyond the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.
Character Drivers
Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to depart the urban setting:
- The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, desires vengeance.
- The knowledgeable figure knows Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous environment.
- The strong character and The healer, having resisted his relatives’ demands to kill the fighter and instead saved him, have no other options.
- Yet, their position as important members in the powerful family could enable the group access areas they usually can’t.
- Moreover, The grateful character swore a life debt to Wicander for his rescue and will now go with him anywhere.
Pursued by Authorities
Lastly, all of them are hunted by the authorities that control the city for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city dangerous:
- The agile adventurer and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
- The strong figure and The healer turned against the powerful family and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
- The fighter is wanted dead by House Halovar.
This leaves them no alternative but to head to the remote area in search of the antagonist.
What’s Next?
From episode three’s Cooldown, we discover that the Soldiers table will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the rest of the cast members to assemble the Questers and Strategists parties.
Audiences can look forward to learning which adventurers will be where in the season’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on October 24.
