The Reason the DNC is Hiding its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: The Inside Story.

The decision by the Democratic National Committee to suppress the release of its own autopsy report concerning the 2024 election is remarkable but not surprising. Resistant to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus often functions closer to a publicity machine rather than an electoral entity focused on building grassroots capacities to secure victories.

A Climate of Conformity

Reluctant to challenge the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the committee has remained under the Biden-Harris shadow throughout this past year. Publishing an official autopsy would have indicated whether party leaders actually want to encourage public discourse about the missteps which allowed Donald Trump to become president again. Yet, the leadership is moving forward as if there is little to glean following the electoral catastrophe of 2024.

The top priority: will this lead to victory? If not, it is an unnecessary diversion from what truly matters," a rationale that has been offered for withholding the report.

Key Issues a Report Might Have Explored

A genuine analysis with any value would tackle head-on certain uncomfortable matters. Among them are:

  • Voter Disenchantment: The loss of millions of voters that backed the Democratic ticket in 2020 became a critical factor in the close 2024 election.
  • A Decision to Run: The stubborn choice by the incumbent to run again, and an extremely delayed exit, is seen by some as denying Democratic voters of a competitive nomination process.
  • Losing Touch With Core Democratic Voters: Amid economic anxiety, the electoral effort reportedly ceding to elite contributors while failing to challenge the impact of profit-seeking.
  • The Foreign Policy Factor: An unwillingness to reconsider an approach concerning the situation in Gaza is cited as driving away key demographic groups, especially with youth voters, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • Losing Young Voter Support: Research indicates a major decrease in Democratic support among young voters.

A Pattern of Evasion

Choosing secrecy aligns with a recurring tendency of sidestepping difficult realities. This mirrors an episode in which the vast majority of elected Democrat in Congress supported an incumbent's insistence on running for re-election until a disastrous public debate performance forced an exit.

At the same time, a significant majority within the party's base had been consistently telling pollsters that they opposed the incumbent to seek re-election.

Financial Questions

A substantive autopsy might also examine issues about where money went, including what sums flowed to party strategists as well as advertising contractors during an electoral effort that burned through a colossal war chest in a short period.

The Underlying Issue

Fundamentally, the suppression surrounding this report points to a submission toward the established hierarchy responsible for a losing electoral effort. The message for ordinary supporters – including countless dedicated activists – appears to be that they do not have a right to see the lessons party chiefs have learned based on a report based on extensive interviews.

A political entity unwilling to publicly examine where it went wrong will struggle to escape the rut which was so advantageous to their opponents.
